Following the release of 9 out of 10 BECE results for 2024 candidates, parents and candidates have been wondering and asking if the West African Examination Council will release their BECE Creative Arts and Design (CAD) results before school placements are released.
The subject was one of the newly introduced under the Common Core Curriculum. The curriculum was to a large extent rushed even without textbooks, making the teaching of subjects, especially the new ones like CAD, difficult for teachers and schools.
Whatever the reasons for the pending results, WAEC, GES, and the MoE must collectively work on releasing the pending result since it will play a critical role in the final determination of the results of many candidates.
Reasons why WAEC must release 2024 BECE Creative Arts and Design results
Currently, the results of 9 subjects released can change for several candidates if the result is released. Its release is more likely to improve the results of many candidates or leave them unchanged in the state they are now in.
Let us take a simple example to illustrate how the release of the CAD can improve the results of some students.
Assuming Sandrah Pampo scored the following grades in the 9 released results:
- English Language – 1
- Mathematics – 2
- Integrated Science, 2
- Social Studies – 1
- Computing: 4
- RME -1
- Career Technology: 3
- Creative Arts and Design (P) Pending
- French: 4
- Ghanaian Language: 4
Based on the above, Sandrah Pampo’s grades from the 4 core subjects are 1+2+2+1 = 6.
The two best currently are RME and Career Technology = 1 + 3 = 4
Now Sandrah Pampo’s grade without Creative Arts and Design is 6+4 = Aggregate 10.
In the case that Sandrah Pampo scores either grade 1, 2, or 3 in the pending Creative Arts and Design, her grade will reduce.
If she scores 1 in Creative Arts and Design, her final grade will now be 1+1+6 = aggregate 8.
If she scores 2 in Creative Arts and Design, her final grade will now be 1+2+6 = aggregate 9.
If she scores 3 or any other worse grade in Creative Arts and Design, her final grade will remain as it was without CAD, thus 1+3+6 = aggregate 10.
If a student scores a better grade in the pending Creative Arts and Design, his or her aggregate will improve, and the final raw score for the determination of school placement will also improve.
Again, for some students, their strength lies in mathematics; for another group, it is social studies, while others are better performers in creative arts and design. If the result for the subject is not released, such students can be said to have been shortchanged since the result can improve their final grade and raw score.

Finally, teachers and students studied the CAD for three years, and many struggled to study it even without the supply of textbooks by the government. It will be naturally unfair not to recite the results of the subject. Students and parents are already demoralised by the current “P” Pending remarks about the subject. The best WAEC, GES, and MoE can do is to solve this jigsaw puzzle.
The above simple but realistic scenario is likely to be the effect of the release of the results for the CAD. WAEC, GES, and MoE must ensure that they release the pending results to help in the fair placement of students who would have done better in terms of grades and raw scores if the results of the subject are released.
