There is so much students and parents need to know about the next three phases of the BECE: the release of the 2024 BECE, 2024 school placement, and the commencement of the new academic year for SHS1 students. This post will shed more light on these three phases and touch on critical issues you have not read anywhere in recent times.
With the 2024 BECE ending on July 15 and school selection being dealt with, all candidates and parents are anxious about the release of the BECE results and the release of school placement on the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) portal. Once these are over, the placement ushers students into readiness for school as SHS1 students.

2024 School Placement facts and procedures based on schools placement history for the last 8 years (2016-2024)

What is the school placement site, and how do I check my placement?

The CSSPS portal, https://www.cssps.gov.gh, is an online portal for checking school placement. The portal goes live a few days after the release of the school placements.

When you check your school placement status and you find out that you have been placed, the placement page will show the following information:.

i. Placed school (name and location).
ii. Residential status (whether day or boarding)
iii. Programme of study
iv. School calendar start date.

Do you know the school placement documents to be printed when schools are released?

If a student is placed, the placement documents online must be printed. It is important that you also save the pages in PDF on your phone or computer. If you check your placement in a café, ask the café attendant to send the PDF documents (placement) to your WhatsApp.

Parents and students are to print a maximum of three different documents from the CSSPS portal. These are:

  1. The placement form (the school the candidate is placed)
  2. The SHS1 item list, which often contains the items the student is expected to bring to school.
  3. A form to be filled out by parents/students but signed by the head teacher of the basic school attended or any one in public service and in higher authority.

What are the other documents parents and students must be preparing ahead of the release of the 2024 BECE results and school placements?

You will need four passport-size photos to be used for the school registrations.

Get an A4-size envelope, but my clear bag will be the best to prevent your documents from getting dirty and safe.

Once the forms printed from the CSSPS portal have been fully completed, the placement results and the BECE result slip printed with the other relevant documents mentioned above must be taken to the school in which the candidate has been placed in order to enrol, obtain a school prospectus, and prepare for school.

What do you do if you are not placed and you don’t have the chance to do self-placement?

Every year, at least 100,000 students miss placement into all their schools. In 2023, BECE candidates chose 11 schools, yet over 100,000 were not placed.

Often students who qualify for placement but are not placed in any of their school choices due to the competition for those schools or due to some other reasons apart from obtaining 9 in mathematics or English are given the chance to use the self placement.

If you do not get the chance to use the self-placement module and you score 9 in mathematics or English, you will not be placed in any school by the government. Such students would have to seek admission in private SHS or re-sit the BECE as private candidates. Once the BECE exam for private candidates is passed, the candidate can apply for placement.

What must I do if I am to use the self-placement module?

The self-placement module is a special chance given to all candidates who passed the BECE but were not placed. This self-placement module allows parents or students to manually choose schools from those made available on the platform and be placed instantly. The school, program, and accommodation type are some of the important choices the student or parent must make.

What must you do days before the release of BECE results and school placement?

When WAEC hints of its readiness to release BECE results, students become tense. The stress of knowing the results are going to be released soon can even make some students sick.

Students are advised to stay calm during this phase of the BECE. Students and parents must also get the BECE result checker ahead of the release of the results from reliable sources such as the Education-News Consult. We sell valid BECE result checkers, and you can buy from us.

Before placement is released, get a valid school placement voucher from Education-News Consult. Keep your hope alive, but be ready for surprises since it is possible you may get placed into your favourite school choice.

What if you are placed in a school you did not choose? What do you do?

This is a common occurrence when school placements are released, but you can get this resolved. Often, the GES and the Free SHS secretariat put a team of customer service providers together through the call centres, prepared to help resolve school placement issues. Do well to get the new contact for the year. You have to call them and explain your issues. Before calling them, be very clear in your mind what your problem is. Call them and explain the issue to them. They will most often help to resolve the issues for you after a few days. Keep calling them if the call does not go through.

If you are placed in a school as a day student, is it possible to change it to boarding when you enrol?

No, you cannot make any changes to this. The government will provide schools with boarding accommodation financial resources based on the number of students officially placed in the school as boarding students. Since you were placed as a day student, your data cannot be changed by the school to a boarder.

Can a person change schools after enrolment?

No. The placement process ends once a candidate begins the admission process by going to the school to complete the relevant form(s). Any movement from one school to another after enrolment is considered a transfer. A student can only transfer after one academic year.

Can a student change residential status or program of study after placement?

NO. A candidate usually gets placed into a particular school based on their preferred program and the residential status they chose. A candidate competes for a slot in a particular school based on the preferences provided. Therefore, neither the residential status nor the program of study can be changed.

Can I change a school I selected through self-placement?

YES. A candidate who got placed in a school through self-placement can change the school on the portal so long as that candidate has not enrolled in a school. To enroll means you have, for instance, visited the school and picked the school prospectus to begin the process.

What is the difference between being placed in an school and being enrolled in a school?

Being placed in a school simply means you have been offered the chance to attend a given school. This is based on your results and choices you made during the school selection. Being enrolled in a school means you have personally visited the school after placement and the school has started your admissions processes.
