New SHS1-3 Students Subjects for Business Students

When the 2024-2025 academic year starts, BECE graduates who will be SHS1 students will be introduced to the new subject combinations under the new curriculum. The new curriculum has seen the introduction of new subjects for all programs, including the business program.
Over their three years of study, business students will study subjects from four (4) subclasses.
The subjects to be studied by business students have been divided into four categories. These are the mandatory or core subjects: Group B, Group C, and Group D. No student studying general arts will learn less than 8 subjects, and no one will go beyond 11 subjects.

What Are the New SHS1 Students Learning Area Subjects for Business Students?

Mandatory (core) subjects for Business students.
For every learner who has selected science as their learning area, the subjects below are mandatory. Every student will study these core subjects.
1. MATHEMATICS
2. English language
3. SOCIAL STUDIES
4. PEH (core but not externally examined)

GROUP B (BUSINESS ELECTIVES)
Each learner must do a MINIMUM OF THREE AND A MAXIMUM OF FIVE of the subjects below.
In Year One, ALL STUDENTS MUST DO
1. BUSINESS STUDIES
THEN IN YEARS TWO & THREE THEY MUST DO THE FOLLOWING:
a. BUSINESS MGT.
b. ACCOUNTING
AND BEWEEN ONE AND THREE OF THE FOLLOWING:
a. ECONOMICS
b. ICT
c. ADDITIONAL MATH also known as elective mathematics.

Group C

Learners may also choose ONE or TWO of the subjects below.
1. GEOGRAPHY
2. GOVERNMENT
3. HISTORY
4. RELIGIOUS STUDIES
5. Literature in English
6. ART & DESIGN STUDIO
7. APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
8. DESIGN & COMM. TECH.
9. HOME ECONOMICS
10. PERFORMING ARTS
11. ART & DESIGN FOUND.
12. ARABIC
13. FRENCH
14. Ghanaian Languages
15. COMPUTING

Group D (HumanitIES)
Learners may also choose ONE of the subjects below.
1. AGRICULTURE
2. BIOLOGY
3. CHEMISTRY
4. PHYSICS
5. PEH(ELECTIVE)
6. AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

READ: New SHS1 Learning Area Subjects For General Arts

Since schools have the reserved discretion to choose which set of subjects to teach or make available for study, candidates who decide to study business will have no option but to opt for any of the combinations of subjects available in the school they are placed into.
For instance, a student who wants to study GRICULTURE from the Category D subjects as a business student will be able to study this subject if it is offered in the school where he or she has been placed. If it is not available, he or she must study what the school has chosen.
