Effective 2024-2025 academic year, the New SHS Students Learning Area Subjects For General Arts Students will be implemented when 2024 BECE graduates report to school as SHS1 students. The courses or subjects they will study over their three-year study have been groups in four (4) subclasses.
Interestingly, General Arts students may have to study one of these subjects (agriculture, biology, chemistry, computing, physics, additive mathematics, PEH (elective), and agricultural science). This will increase their program opportunities at the university level after a successful completion of SHS.
The subjects to be studied by General Arts students have been divided into four (4) categories. These are the mandatory or core subjects: Group B, Group C, and Group D. No student studying General Arts will learn less than 8 subjects, and no one will go beyond 11 subjects.
What Are the New SHS1 Students Learning Area Subjects for General Arts Students?
Mandatory (core) subjects for General Arts students.
For every learner who has selected science as their learning area, the subjects below are mandatory. Every student will study these core subjects.
1. MATHEMATICS
2. English language
3. SOCIAL STUDIES
4. PEH (core but not externally examined)
Group B (general arts electives)
Each learner must do a MINIMUM OF TWO AND A MAXIMUM OF FOUR of the subjects below.
Whichever subjects a student will study from the six subjects here will be determined by the school he or she is placed in and the human resources as well as the other resources available to the school to mount the subject and any other combinations.

5. RELIGIOUS STUDIES
6. LITERATURE IN ENGLISH
Group C (Additional Elections):
Learners may also choose ONE or TWO of the subjects below.
The options to be made available in each school will be predetermined by the school if it has teachers and other facilities needed to teach the subject.

Each public secondary school is expected to have one or more permutation of the subjects from the four categories for their science students.
