The internet has been flooded with disturbing images of SHS1 students from Free SHS at Ullo SHS writing their end-of-semester examinations, prompting many to question the quality of the furniture the students are using. The school is located in the Upper West region.
The pictures provide a vivid reality of the lack of furniture in many public senior schools in Ghana.
Some students had to combine benches and kitchen stools as chairs and tables, respectively, while others had to use and share benches.
An earlier post about the worrying images by the Informed Teachers Network suggested that the students were writing the 2024 WASSCE; however, further details shared showed that the students were rather writing their end-of-year examination.
The critical and worrying issue is the fact that nearly all schools in Ghana are struggling to meet their students’ furniture needs. The shortage of furniture in most free SHSs and campuses is the result of either an inadequate supply of furniture or a lack of regular maintenance and repairs.
The government needs to take proactive steps related to the lack of furniture for students in all public SHSs by ensuring that schools are supplied with new furniture for would-be admitted SHS1 students before placements are released and not the other way around. This way, we can begin to resolve such challenges.
As a nation, we must ensure we solve these basic problems confronting our schools at the pre-tertiary level to help make our students and teachers friendly for effective teaching and learning.

Education-News Consult spotted two messages via the Informed Teachers Network’s Facebook page.
“… While I’m not justifying what we’re seeing, it’s important to clarify that Upper West Media is known for yellow journalism. The students in the photos are not WASSCE candidates; they are first-year students writing their end-of-semester exams. Please be cautious with the information shared from their platform. Concerned Teacher ”
