Are the Common Core BECE questions too difficult for students writing the BECE?
A cross-section of 2024 BECE candidates who have reached out to Education-News Consult is lamenting the difficulty of the WAEC questions. According to the students, the Community Core BECE questions are too difficult.
One important comment on this matter is this: “In the area of science, which they wrote this morning, some of the questions are not based on the common core curriculum, and the set of questions for the candidates by WAEC is above a standard examination.”
Candidates who do not prepare well for the examination—those who had poor or inadequate preparation and support on how to answer the questions that come in the new format—will have challenges facing such questions.
However, so far, the 2024 BECE questions have remained manageable for students who are well prepared. Those who have familiarized themselves with our Common Core Curriculum mock questions find the WAEC questions significantly more manageable.

It is important that schools and teachers coach their candidates well on how to answer the questions now that they have written four subjects out of the maximum of 10 they are expected to write.
A poor performance in the 2024 BECE will create problems for candidates when it comes to their placement in Free SHS. The BECE also serves as an eye-opener for schools and teachers.
The approach to teaching the various subjects and assessing candidates in junior high school must change right from term 1 of the 2024–2025 academic year. This will help better prepare candidates for the next BECE in 2025.
