What is the 2024 BECE Grading System?
The BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) grading system in Ghana assesses students’ performance in various subjects. It is used by WAEC for each subject. Each subject is graded on a scale from 1 to 9, with 1 being the highest (best) grade and 9 being the lowest (worst) grade. Below is the full 2024 BECE Grading System
- Grade 1: 80 – 100% (Excellent)
- Grade 2: 70 – 79% (Very Good)
- Grade 3: 60 – 69% (Good)
- Grade 4: 55 – 59% (Credit)
- Grade 5: 50 – 54% (Credit)
- Grade 6: 45 – 49% (Credit)
- Grade 7: 40 – 44% (Pass)
- Grade 8: 35 – 39% (Pass)
- Grade 9: 0 – 34% (Fail)
Key Points in the 2024 BECE Grading System
- Grades 1 to 6 are considered as pass grades.
- Grades 7 and 8 are pass grades but may not qualify students for admission into highly competitive senior high schools.
- Grade 9 is a fail grade, and students scoring this grade may need to retake the exam or explore alternative education options.
What happens if you score 9 in Mathematics and or English at the BECE?
Students who score 9 in Mathematics, English Language, or both will not be placed in any secondary school by the GES. This has been the practice for the past 7 years.
For instance, if you score grade 1 in all other subjects but obtain a grade 9 in Mathematics or English language, there is no school placement for you and no self-placement. A student who scores grade 7 in all subjects, including grade 8 in mathematics or English language, will get placed. Note that the issue is about Maths and Science.
This grading system above applies to all subjects taken in the BECE.
