We anticipate the Ministry of Education (MoE) to announce the school placement for 2024, but the crucial query is: Will all BECE candidates receive automatic placement? More than 100,000 students who selected 11 second cycle schools in 2023 did not receive automatic placements. Let us understand the issues now.
What is automatic school placement?
Automatic School Placement is the use of the CSSPS portal to place students into one of the 11 schools they chose during the school placement. Once this process is complete, we refer to the student’s placement as automatic. Often, once a student is placed automatically, he or she will see the school into which he or she has been placed as soon as the placement is checked with the student’s index number.
Should we fail to place a candidate, we have two options.
- Option one directs the student to utilize the self-placement module. This module allows all students who passed BECE but were not placed in any of the schools selected to choose new schools from those available on the portal.
- The second option is to receive a placement disqualification notice. This occurs when the candidate fails in mathematics or English language, or if WAEC withholds or cancels a result.

Will the placement of all 2024 BECE candidates be automatic?
The explanations above make it clear that not all BECE students who sit the examination will receive placement. Some students will have the opportunity to self-place, while others will not.
No, we won’t place all 500,000 candidates. We will direct some candidates to use the self-placement module in case they miss the placement.
What should I do if my placement is not automatic?
You can use the self-placement module if you passed the exam but did not receive a score of 9 in either English or Mathematics.
However, if you score a 9 in English or Mathematics, you’ll need to retake the BECE the following year, pass it to secure a job, pursue an apprenticeship, or apply for admission to a private SHS.
What do I do if I do not like the school I am placed in after the release of school placement?
You have no control over your automatic placement if you don’t like it, especially if you choose it.
