SHS1 students start school today: New Updates and Curriculum
The 2024 SHS1 candidates are expected to report from today, while official academic work is expected to start on Monday, 11th November, 2024.
In all, over 500,000 candidates who passed the BECE and used either self-placement, protocol placement, or were placed automatically are expected to report to school.
The first-year students reporting to school on November 7th will be the first batch of SHS students who will be educated based on the new curriculum for secondary schools. The new program has reduced the number of subjects taught at the secondary level from 63 to 36, with an emphasis on application, logic reasoning, and practical skills, among others.
The new curriculum will also not directly enroll students into their programs of choice. For the next year, the SHS1 students will learn their basic 10 curriculum of the common core curriculum they were introduced to in basic 7 at the Junior High School level.
While boarding students are expected to journey from their various residences to their respective schools, students who were offered day accommodation are expected to report for academic work from Monday, 11th November 2024.
SHS1 students start school today, but not for all students who complete basic school this year. Some students have still not been able to use the self placement to make changes or place themselves. Again, some results are still withheld by WAEC, while others who leave far from the day schools they have been placed in are waiting for the necessary changes to be made. Such students may not be able to report to school until the challenges they currently face are resolved.
Per the calendar released by the Ghana Education Service, the students will return home on 5th December as part of plans to ensure students who are eligible voters return to their residence to cast their votes. The students will then return to school on November 9 to continue with their academic work.
