The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana calls on the government to increase the teacher trainee allowance from GHS400 to GHS800.
According to the leadership of the trainees, the current monthly allowance of GHS400.0 is inadequate, according to the trainees’ leadership.
According to the students, out of the GHS400.00, only GHS196.00 goes directly to them to take care of their needs. This only accounts for 49% of the GHS400.00.
The colleges add the remaining GHS204.00, or 51%, to the student allowance for food. In reality, trainees receive a GHS 196.00 student allowance.
The student front’s leadership has called on the government to raise the entire amount from GHS400 to GHS800. This request translates to 100% of the allowance.
According to the students, a 100% increase will ensure that they have at least GHS400.00 of the total component to take care of their needs instead of GHS196.00.
They stated that this would allow them to afford reading materials. The students disclosed that they started the demand for the increase to GHS800.00 in 2023. The Minister of Education has received the request, and they have also organized a press conference to discuss the issue.
The student leadership organised a press statement where they complained that the government’s reintroduction of the allowance in 2017 has kept it at GHS400.00. They complained about the Ministry of Education’s inability to respond positively to their request for an increase.
The student leadership further detailed that the feeding component of the GHS400.00 has become inadequate, resulting in inadequate food provision to teacher trainees in their respective colleges of education.
