Ghanaians Want BECE Graduates to Choose Schools After Results

Ghanaian Want BECE Graduates to Choose Schools After Results

The BECE has shifted its school selection phase from before the exam to after the exam in the last ten years. We anticipated that the shift to post-BECE exam school selection would assist learners in making well-informed choices following their examination, while also reducing the non-automatic placement of students.

Nearly seven years on, the post-BECE exam school selection suffered the same problems that were present in the pre-BECE school selection.

Education-Watch, along with other stakeholders, has been emphasizing the need for candidates to select schools only after the release of their BECE results, due to the challenges posed by the current school selection process.

In our quest to find out what Ghanaians in general perceive as ideal, we embarked on a simple survey to find out what is the most preferred option.

The Education-News Consult sought to find out what Ghanaians want in terms of school selection.

The options they had to choose from were.

[a] School selection after BECE results

[b] School selection before BECE results

[c] I don’t care.

Our post titled “Should SHS selection be done after the release of 2024 BECE results? has had some interesting responses, and all were in favour of the call for school selection to be undertaken only after the 2024 BECE results have been released. However, there was also a call for school-specific cut-off grades and raw scores to be made public to guide parents and learners in their choice of schools.

Below are some responses supporting the above.

  1. It’s good, though but the schools should let us know their cut off grades and cut off raw scores to help the kids in schools and areas of study

  2. The results should be released early to allow students to choose their schools.

  3. Yes schools should be selected after results are out

  4. It will be good for them to select the school after the release of the exams results

  5. It will be a good choice to choose school after the BECE results have been released

  6. It is best to choose schools after the result is out, that way, it helps you know the kind of schools to choose according to your grade.

Our surveys on WhatsApp and Telegram were not different.

The majority of participants (61.01%) believe that SHS selection should be done after BECE results are released. This suggests a significant preference for using BECE results as a basis for SHS placement decisions.

A substantial minority (28.65%) disagree, indicating that nearly a third of participants have concerns or different perspectives on the timing of SHS selection.

A small percentage (10.34%) of participants are indifferent, indicating that for some, the timing of SHS selection is not a significant issue.

Implications

  • For Educational Policy Makers:There is a clear majority of support for aligning SHS selection with BECE results. Policymakers may consider this preference when designing or modifying the SHS selection process to ensure it reflects the wishes of the majority.
  • For students and parents:Knowing that a majority prefer selection after BECE results can help in planning and setting expectations for the SHS admission process. This can also alleviate some uncertainties associated with the pre-selection process.
  • For Schools and Educators:The preference for post-BECE result selection may influence the timing of SHS admissions, potentially leading to a more transparent and merit-based admission system.

The data indicates that a significant majority of respondents (61.01%) support the idea of conducting SHS selection after the BECE results are released. This suggests a strong preference for a results-based selection process, which could lead to fairer and more informed decisions regarding SHS placements. However, a notable portion of the respondents (28.65%) oppose this idea, and their concerns would also need to be considered in any policy changes. The remaining 10.34% of respondents are indifferent, reflecting a smaller segment of the population for whom the timing of selection is not a major concern.
