The three education unions at the center of this potential strike are the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).

The unions have complained about delays by the finance ministry, which has not issued the needed letter to effect the payment.

The allowances creating the current contention are Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and other allowances due members of the three unions.

The Education-News Consult sighted a statement on Monday, August 5, in which they issued an ultimatum to the government.

They have insisted on receiving their allowance by August 8 at the latest, failing which they plan to go on strike the next day.

The unions have revealed how frustrated they have been as a result of the government’s inactivity.

The unions accused the government of employing Machiavellian tactics to deny them their rightful dues.

They emphasized that they had run out of patience and were ready to take the necessary steps to get their demands met.

The unions reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of their members, urging the government to act swiftly to avoid disruption.

They called on the Ministry of Finance to honour its commitments and avoid the impending industrial action.

The unions have given the government (Ministry) until the end of work on Thursday, 8th August, to release the letter. The unions will force industrial action on the 9th of August 2024 if they fail to release the letter. The SSA-UoG, FUSSAG, and TEWU (TUC) remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding the rights of their members and will persist until they achieve justice.
