EC begins mop-up registration for students 18 years

The Electoral Commission of Ghana will from 1st August 2024 to 3rd August 2024 undertake a final mop-up voter registration exercise throughout the country. This registration is for all students or Ghanaians who turned 18 years old since the last registration. What it means is that, even if you will turn 18 years old on August 3rd, which is the final day for registration, you can register on your birthday to also have the chance to be part of the decision-making when Ghana goes to the polls to elect a president and parliamentary candidates come December 7th, 2024.

We are in this publication urging all 18-year-olds, including all eligible voters who have yet to register with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, to do so.

The mop-up voter registration exercise begins today, August 1st, and ends on Saturday, August 3rd. Three days!

Remember, your vote is not just a right; it’s power.

Anyone who is 18 years old or older but, for whatever reason, did not register during the main registration exercise is also eligible to visit the registration centers and register for the three-day mop-up exercise.

According to the EC, it is targeting between 50,000 and 70,000 new voters on the electoral roll. All 268 district offices, 26 public universities, and 41 prison centers across the country will conduct voter registration.

The EC undertook a limited voter registration exercise from May 7 to 29, 2024. At the end of the 23-day exercise, the EC had captured a total of 778,447 voters on the register, including 408,332 females, representing 52.45 percent, and 370,115 males, representing 47.55 percent.

At the end of the last registration, EC disclosed that it had a total of 18,681,366 provisional registered voters for the 2024 December polls.

The EC has contacted Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to guarantee uninterrupted internet services during the registration period.

To register, applicants must have one of the following:

  • You can use your Ghana Card or Ghana Passport as evidence of your eligibility.
  • In the absence of any of the documents, an applicant would require two persons who were already registered voters as guarantors.

The EC stated that guarantors could only guarantee for 10 voters, pointing out that “those who guaranteed for 10 voters during the limited exercise cannot guarantee for another voter during the mop-up exercise.”
