However, the bill is yet to come before the parliament of Ghana. The bill, if passed, will remove the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from Ghana’s education system as a pre-requisite for students who must enter senior high school.
The findings were first made public by Graphic.com.gh.
- The proposed Free SHS bill seeks to restructure Ghana’s current education system.
- Make secondary education 6 years
- It will separate basic schools, thus from KG1 to Basic 6, from the junior high school.
- If the bill is passed into law, the first national or international education certificate students will acquire after several years of studying will be an SHS certificate and not the current BECE.
- The proposed Free SHS bill will ensure that both JHS and SHS schools are located on the same premises. Thus, Aburi Girls SHS will have a junior high school on the same premises or under the same management so that the junior high schools will benefit from the human and material resources of the secondary schools. (Existing schools with both JHS and SHS students will continue this practice, similar to the old system where students from ordinary and advanced levels studied together.)
- The new education system will mirror the look and feel of Ghana’s old middle school and secondary school relationships.
- Learners will write the Common Entrance Examination for school selection.
- The main examination written by students after SHS will be reserved for certification for either employment or further education.
Watch out for more updates on the new education system, which will use the common core curriculum for junior high schools as well as the new secondary school curriculum, which has reduced the current 63 subjects studied by SHS students to 36.
