BECE graduates and parents will face the challenge of selecting from nine exciting new SHS programmes when the 2024 school selection process begins.
While many of the subjects to be studied are a combination of old and new ones, the programmes themselves have changed a lot with the addition and removal of known subjects. The SHS has slashed the number of subjects from 63 to 36. The new curriculum has replaced the word programme with learning areas.

The new subject areas or programs include APPLIED TECHNOLOGY, ARTS, AND LANGUAGE, with the recent introduction of STEM.
What are the 9 exciting new SHS programmes for 2024 BECE graduates?
The learning areas for JHS graduates entering the SHS are nine in number.
All students who choose one of these nine learning areas must study five mandatory subjects, but only four will undergo external examinations. These are MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES, ENGLISH LANGUAGE, GENERAL SCIENCE, and PEH (core but not externally examined).
Take note of the following subject grouping:
- Core subjects (Group A) are mandatory for all learners.
- Learners in Group B must take a maximum of four subjects.
- Learners can further diversify their studies by selecting two or three subjects from Additional Electives, depending on the learning area or program.
- To guarantee a well-rounded education, you can also choose one subject from the Humanities (Group D).
- This curriculum emphasises a strong foundation in diverse but interrelated disciplines while offering flexibility to explore additional interests and subjects in other areas.
