The Ghana Education Service (GES) released the first ever National SHS1 Prospectus for BECE graduates entering senior high school (SHS 1) in 2023. This was done to harmonise the various senior high school prospects of public schools and prevent the challenges that they brought. In 2024, the list of items required from students who are placed in day and boarding public schools is not expected to change.
In 2023, GES introduced the new prospectus, and the items to be supplied to each school by a student placed were part of the school placement documents printed from the CSSPS portal.
The National SHS Prospectus was introduced under the leadership of Minister of Education and Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah. The aim of the new unified prospectus was to reduce the items found on the SHS prospectus of individual schools, which became a great concern and sparked national debate.
Apart from the specific items students were supposed to come to school with as listed on the National SHS Prospectus, all students were also required to come with general items.
What Are The National SHS 1 Prospectus For The New Academic Year?
GENERAL ITEMS
- VALID NHIS CARD
- NATIONAL ID CARD (GHANA CARD IF ANY)
- Two passport-size photographs
- PHOTOCOPY OF BIRTH CERTIFICATE/BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE IF REQUIRED BY SCHOOL
PROSPECTUS FOR SHS BOARDING STUDENTS
When a student is officially placed in a public boarding school, he or she is likely to be requested to come to school with the following: Some of the items will be determined by the gender of the student.
- Hard Body Suit Case OR TRUNK
- Chop Box (wooden/plastic)
- Drinking Cup, 1 plastic or stainless plate, and a set of cutlery
- Toiletries (1 deodorant, 1 pack T-roll, tooth paste, tooth brush, soap, pomade, and 2 packs of sanitary pads for 4 girls)
- Decent sandals (school’s specification)—no embellishment
- A pair of leather slippers (school’s specification)
- Decent Sneakers (black or white)
- 2 pairs of socks (school’s specification)
- 1 pyjamas/sleep wear
- Underwear (5 pants and 3 vests for girls, 3 boxer shorts or pants, and 3 singlets for boys)
- 1 plastic bucket with cover and pail
- RSV/NIV Bible/Quran and Hymn Book for Christians (School Specified)
- Pillow covered with Mackintosh
- 2 students’ bedsheets with 2 pillowcases—plain white
- 1 blanket & sleeping cloth
- A pair of Khaki trousers
- A Pair of white trousers
- White dress for ladies
- 2 White Shirts
- Student’s size mosquito net
- 1 school bag
- 1 mathematical set & scientific calculator
- Standard Graph Book
- 1 Cutlass
One-third of SHS students to submit;
- A pair of hand gloves (hard)
- Liquid Soap (5 litres)
- 1 kg washing powdered soap
Another one-third to submit these
- 1 Bleach (small size)
- 1 Dust Pan
- 1 Long Handle Broom
- 1 Scrubbing brush
Another one third to submit these
- Standing Mop and Mop Bucket
- 1 Duster
- 1 Short Local Broom

While school placements have not been released for 2024 BECE graduates, parents are encouraged to study the full list provided here. They are also to start saving toward the purchase of these items for their wards.
It will, however, be very risky for parents to start buying a lot of the items since they cannot currently tell whether their ward will be placed in daycare or boarding schools and which items the learner will be required to specifically submit on the day of reporting to school. Parents should work towards raising money for buying the likely 2024 SHS Prospectus For SHS1 students.
