A total of 956,100 entries were for its IGCSEs and O levels, attended by 295,972 students in 4,581 schools across 140 countries.

Growth in exam entries around the world

The countries with the highest entries were the US, China, and Pakistan, with entries rising 21 per cent, 17 per cent and 7 per cent respectively. In total, 58,000 entries were received from UK schools.

This year, IGCSE, O-level, and AS- and A-level results will all be released on the same day for the first time in several years, following feedback from schools.

Rod Smith, group managing director for international education at Cambridge, said that the growth underlined the desire for international education and congratulated those receiving exam results and the “dedicated teachers” who had helped them in their journey.

While Cambridge revealed that core subjects such as the sciences, maths and English continue to be the most popular globally, it also shed light on some of the fastest-growing subjects being taken – suggesting that schools are broadening their curricula.

Environmental management entries were up 36 percent year-on-year at IGCSE and O level and up 30 per cent at AS level. IGCSE and O-level global perspective entries rose by 15 per cent, while AS- and A-level entries in the subject climbed by 17 per cent.

Marine science entries increased by 26 percent at AS and A level, while computer science entries rose by 14 per cent at IGCSE and O level and 19 per cent at AS and A level.
