The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) starts today, with close to 570,000 candidates from public and private schools expected to sit the one-week and one-day exam. According to the data released by WAEC, exactly 569,095 candidates would sit for this year’s BECE.
Again, a total of 282,648 males and 286,447 females will sit the exam in 19,506 participating schools across the country. The 569,095 candidates who would sit for this year’s BECE represent a decrease of 5.29 percent compared to the 2023 entry figure of 600,900.
The examination starts on July 8 and ends on July 15, 2024.
The 2024 BECE Examination has incorporated all the new changes.
- The exam will use the new Common Core Curriculum for the first time.
- For the first time, candidates will be required to answer case studies, critical thinking, and application questions.
- Candidates will undergo examinations in 11 subjects for the first time, with each writing a maximum of 10 subjects.
- The 2024 exam will be administered by WAEC using two different syllabuses or curricula for private candidates and school candidates.
- Candidates will write the Creative Arts and Design and Career Technology subjects for the first time as a result of their introduction under the Common Core Curriculum.
- For the first time, WAEC will sterilize the BECE (Section A) objective test questions on a regional basis.
- For the first time, the BECE will start on Monday and end on Monday. Until this year, it has always ended on Fridays.
On the Issues of Examination Malpractices
WAEC has called on candidates and the general public to be careful about supposed leaked examination questions circulating on social media. It has challenged candidates to follow the rules of the examination.
According to the council some candidates now insert phone numbers and money in answer booklets
WAEC has tasked its examination supervisors to search candidates thoroughly.
“Supervisors and invigilators are to search candidates thoroughly to ensure that they do not have in possession mobile phones or any other foreign materials in the examination hall.” WAEC’s Head of Corporate Affairs, John Kapi disclosed this.
Teachers, heads of schools and all stakeholders who are not permiited to be present at the examination centres are advised to stay away.
The Council has noted with concern a number of cases where candidates write telephone numbers or the phrase, “help me”, “call me”, “just call my mum” etc. in their answer booklets. Others also insert various amounts of money in their answer booklets soliciting for help from examiners.”

“We wish to state clearly that this is classified as seeking external assistance and it’s a punishable offence. In addition, candidates should note that tearing their question paper or answer booklet during examination, refusing to submit work scripts after examination, seeking or receiving help from non-candidates are forms of examination malpractice,” he said.
