2024 BECE Starts Monday, July 8
Candidates will start the examination on Monday, July 8th, with English Language and Religious and Moral Education, and end on Monday, July 15th, with the Arabic Language paper; however, a high number of candidates will complete the examination on Friday, July 12th, 2024, except those writing the Arabic Language paper.
Since its first administration in 1990, the 2024 BECE will mark the 35th edition of the examination. However, this will be the first time WAEC administers the exam for candidates based on the new Common Core Curriculum.
The examination this year holds special significance as it will introduce questions in critical thinking, application, and case study formats for the first time, aimed at ensuring candidates’ readiness. This year’s examination has evoked a range of emotions due to the unique nature of its question format. This has increased the anxiety of candidates, teachers, schools, and parents.

Several free SHS and free TVET public schools will accept candidates who excel in the examination. These candidates will also be the first batch to start the new free SHS programmes, under which learners will study basic 10 subjects such as social studies, mathematics, integrated science, and English language in the first year. Select subjects from the approved 36 subjects for the new SHS system, starting in the 2024–2025 academic year, will follow.
