2024 BECE candidates to start new SHS curriculum next academic year?

All 2024 BECE candidates who pass the BECE and enroll in either a public or private SHS will receive tutoring using the new curriculum following the introduction of a new Senior High School (SHS) curriculum.

In JHS1, the students learned about the Common Core Curriculum, and they will write the first-ever BECE, which will be based on the new JHS section of the curriculum.

According to the new education system, successful students at the 2024 BECE will continue to study the Common Core Curriculum in SHS1. According to the new education system, SHS1 students will study the Basic 10 topics in the Basic Schools Common Core Curriculum.

The government is changing the curriculum at the SHS level as part of the transformative efforts to re-focus Ghana’s education system.

According to Education-News Consult, the new curriculum will introduce learners to four levels of knowledge during their studies. These levels of knowledge are referred to as depth of knowledge (DOK).

DOK 1 will require learners to be able to recall and reproduce basic facts and information. This is the lowest level of knowledge that learners must acquire. DOK2 will require learners to acquire basic skills and appreciate concepts. DOK3 will demand that learners begin to think and apply strategic thinking to the subjects and topics they have learned.

When it comes to DOK 4, students will begin to engage in extended reasoning. The inclusion of application, critical thinking, and case study questions at the 2024 BECE will set the tone for the type of education the learners will receive at the SHS level. We expect the Common Core Curriculum to equip learners with the necessary foundational knowledge and understanding before they transition to senior high school.

When 2024 BECE candidates start SHS1 under the new curriculum, the subjects taught in SHS will also decrease from 63 to 36.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to deploy its officers at the guidance and counselling unit to prepare and educate learners about the new curriculum to be rolled out at the SHS level.

We expect the new curriculum to help learners have a flexible and personalised learning experience.

Speaking on the new SHS curriculum, Prof. Edward Appiah, the Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), revealed that the government has made progress with the curriculum implementation.

“GES is relocating all its guidance and counselling staff who are currently in the classroom.” They will now concentrate on these activities, setting up offices in the schools to provide guidance to the children. Of course, the teachers will also help with that.

“We want to even start from JHS 3 so that the children going to SHS 1 will at least have an idea,” he said.

Speaking on the availability of teaching and learning materials for the curriculum, Prof. Appiah assured that the materials would be made available before full implementation.

According to him, the manual for teachers is ready for them to use when the new curriculum is rolled out.

“For the teachers, we are done. I have told you about the teacher manual. So each manual for each subject,” Prof. Edward Appiah explained while speaking on the matter.
