2024-2025 New SHS ART Programme and Subjects

With the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, SHS1 students will be introduced to the New SHS ART Programme and Subjects. The subject area will give learners the chance to study at least 8 subjects and at most 11 subjects during their three years of study. The art programme is one of the new subject areas or programmes introduced. There has not been a specific arts programme such as this one.

When the new curriculum is implemented, SHS students will be introduced to the core subjects

 

The 2024-2025 New SHS ART Programme and Subjects

Below are the full details of all the subjects to be learnt.

Core Subjects (Group A – Mandatory for All Learners)

These subjects are compulsory for every learner:

  1. Mathematics
  2. Social Studies
  3. English Language
  4. General Science
  5. Physical Education and Health (PEH) (Core but not externally examined)

Art Electives (Group B)

Each learner must take the following:

  1. Art & Design Foundation

Additionally, they must choose one, two, or three of the following subjects:

  1. Art & Design Studio
  2. Performing Art
  3. Design & Communication Technology
  4. ICT

Additional Electives (Group C)

Learners may choose one or two of the following subjects:

  1. Applied Technology
  2. Business Studies
  3. Home Economics
  4. Economics
  5. Geography
  6. History
  7. Religious Studies
  8. Literature in English
  9. Ghanaian Languages
  10. Arabic
  11. French

Humanities (Group D)

Learners may choose one of the following subjects:

  1. Agriculture
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Computing
  5. Physics
  6. Additional Mathematics
  7. PEH (Elective)
  8. Agricultural Science

Summary:

  • Core Subjects: All learners must take the core subjects listed in Group A.
  • Art Electives: Must include Art & Design Foundation and additional subjects from Group B.
  • Additional Electives and Humanities: Learners have the flexibility to choose subjects from Groups C and D based on their interests and future academic or career plans.

  • Art & Design Foundation: Careers in fine arts, graphic design, illustration, interior design, and fashion design.
  • Art & Design Studio: Careers in visual arts, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and art curation.
  • Performing Art: Careers in acting, theatre production, dance, music performance, choreography, and directing.
  • Design & Communication Technology: Careers in multimedia design, advertising, web design, animation, and digital marketing.
  • ICT: Careers in software development, information technology, cybersecurity, systems analysis, and network administration.
