  • Should we destroy supplies such as these because others have not been provided?

A worrying video sighted by Education-News Consult on social media shows a group of community youth destroying new school desks supplied by schools in the community.

The youth, through the voice of the woman who may have recorded the destruction, demanded the establishment of a stable telephone network. The local youth’s action is utterly unacceptable and deserves condemnation.

Every community has several needs, and the network and education supplies are two of the needs portrayed by their actions and frustrations. These two needs also have different beneficiaries and stakeholders who will make use of them. The supply of the new future will go a long way towards augmenting the limited desks in the schools in the community; however, its destruction by the youth is sad.

According to the inhabitants, the MP did not supply them with what they wanted. They said they want internet and not chairs, and that, they will destroy the chairs and burn them.

The destruction of the dual desk numbering about fifteen was undertaken by the youth at the premises of the school that was supplied in the presence of schoolchildren and teachers who looked on in silence.

The young women present at the destruction scene chanted no network no vote as the young men destroyed the desk means for the learners.

At the time of this publication, the Ghana Education News team could not independently verify the exact community and district where this sad incident took place.

The Ghana Police, Ghana Education Service, and the Ministry of Education must take proactive action now and get to the bottom of this irresponsible citizenship behaviour. When the government fails to provide the needed education infrastructure and supplies for schools, we, as Ghanaians, are the same people who complain about the lack of support.

It is therefore absolutely wrong for the youth to vent their frustration over the lack of stable communication service on the desks needed by their children and siblings in school.

The youth do not have any moral right to destroy the desk since that act is criminal and will also not lead to the supply of telephone services in the area.

We humbly call on the police and all education stakeholders to launch an investigation and arrest the youth captured in the video for questioning.

We must collectively guard against such actions because, in the end, they do not help anyone but rather create avoidable expenses and waste of our nation’s scarce resources invested in such supplies for schools.
