A few hours before the start of the 2024 BECE for final-year students in Junior High School, WAEC released a new update on the 2024 Free SHS school selection.
According to the GES, the 2024 Free SHS School Selection Process will commence right after the BECE examination ends on Monday, July 15, 2024.
This was contained in a press release from the Ghana Education Service dated July 7, 2024.
The relevant portion of the said press release, which relates to this update, read, “Parents, candidates, and the general public are informed that the school selection process will commence after the BECE. Details of the election process will be communicated in due course. ”
Given that the 2024–2025 academic year will see the introduction of the new SHS curriculum as well as 36 subjects instead of the previous 63, the GES, in collaboration with the Free SHS secretariat and other public education agencies, is expected to release an updated school selection process and procedures.
During the 2023 school selection phase, candidates were made to select up to 11 schools from categories A to D yet over 100,000 candidates were not automatically placed, leading to the need for them to use the self-placement module of the Computerised School Selection System (CSSPS).

Parents and schools would need to work together to ensure they select the right schools and programs that will match the applicant’s career aspirations, academic strengths, and capabilities.

In the last three years, the government has called for and promoted the need for learners to enroll in technical and vocational programmes as well as STEM-related programs and schools.
These programs are expected to take center stage in the school selection process to ensure the country’s human resources are directed toward the right path.
Parents are advised to always select schools for their wards based on academic strength and capabilities and not taste and preference.

The same approach should be followed in terms of their program choices and arrangements.
Stakeholders are to keep an eye on this portal and that of the GES for updates on the school selection process and timelines to be released by the management of the Ghana Education Service.
