The Ghana Education Service (GES) has declared March 28th as National Continuous Professional Development Day. This was announced in a letter addressed to all Regional Directors of Education on March 18th, 2025.
The GES disclosed that the declaration is in recognition of the importance of continuous professional development for teachers. It added that the declaration is also to ensure all teachers nationwide have the necessary institutional support and dedicated time to participate in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Training for Teachers without disruption.
The Regional Directors of Education have therefore been directed to relay the information to the respective metro and districts under their jurisdictions.
The letter did not, however, provide further details as to what is expected to be done in each school or region to celebrate the day. Per the letter, this day may only be a commemorative celebration.

Recognizing the demanding nature of the profession, this focus acknowledges the importance of teacher wellbeing. Addressing mental health concerns helps prevent burnout, improves teacher morale, and fosters a more supportive and positive school environment. Teachers and schools should use this day to prioritize self-care and create a culture of support. Engaging in mental health and wellbeing training can provide teachers with valuable coping mechanisms and resources. Schools can use the day to organize wellness activities and promote open discussions about mental health.
Professional Growth and Career Advancement:
CPD provides teachers with opportunities to enhance their skills, expand their knowledge base, and stay current with educational trends. This can lead to increased confidence, improved job satisfaction, and enhanced career prospects. It also helps to keep the teachers up to date with new curriculum changes, and new teaching technologies.
Participatig in CPD activities demonstrates a teacher’s commitment to professional development, which can be advantageous for career advancement.
