The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has announced that it will serialize the objective (multiple-choice) questions for the 2024 BECE across various subjects for the examination.
To prevent exam leakage, serializing 2024 BECE objective questions entails creating multiple versions of the same exam with the questions presented in different order. Here’s a detailed explanation of the process and its benefits:
The serialised questions will be based on a regional basis; thus, questions in Greater Accra will be the same as those in other regions, but question 1 in, say, English will not be the same as question 1 for candidates taking the same paper in the Volta region.
Why did WAEC decide to serialize the 2024 BECE objective questions?
This move is part of efforts to reduce the likelihood of exam question leakages. Thus, while the questions are the same, their order will vary by region.
- Reduces Cheating:
- With multiple versions, it becomes much harder for students to share answers during the exam.
- Leaks of one version do not compromise the integrity of the entire exam.
- Enhances Fairness:
- Because they cannot rely on prior knowledge of the questions, assessments of students are more equitable.
- It ensures that the evaluation reflects the students’ actual understanding and preparation.
- Increases Security:
- The process of serialising makes it more challenging for those attempting to leak the questions, as they would need to access multiple versions.
- This increases the logistical difficulty and risk of potential leaks.
Will Section B be sealed?
However, the theory section will remain the same for all students, with identical question arrangements. Candidates and teachers should take note of this accurate information.
In a related development, WAEC anticipates starting the 2024 BECE on Monday, July 8th, 2024. On day one, the examination will begin with the English Language paper and end with the Religious and Moral Education (RME) paper. The examination will conclude on Monday, July 15th, with the administration of the Arabic paper between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
