How to calculate 2024 BECE aggregate grade correctly

Now that the 2024 BECE results have been released, let’s examine how to accurately calculate the 2024 BECE aggregate grade to prevent any potential errors. There are three stages involved in determining a student’s correct aggregate grade.

Stage 1: Get the grades obtained by the candidate in all four core subjects and add them.

The four core subjects of a student, along with their respective grades, are listed below:

  1. English Language: 1
  2. Mathematics: 1
  3. Integrated Science, 1
  4. Social Studies – 1

So the raw scores for this student for only the 4 core subjects are 1+1+1+1 = 2.

Note that the grades of all four core subjects will be added for each student to determine their grades, no matter what grade was obtained. Even if you obtain 8 in all the core subjects, they will be added before the best two other subjects are added.

Stage Two: Obtain the grades for each of the remaining 6 subjects.

Let’s look at that for our students.

5. Computing: 1

6. RME-2

7. Creative Arts and Design 2

8. Career Technology: 4

9. French: 1

10. Ghanaian Language – 1

From the remaining six subjects, the candidates best two subjects with the best grades will be picked.

In this case, the subjects are three, since three of them are in grade 1, but we pick only two.

Computing: 1 and Ghanaian Language – 1 so the total for these two is 1+1 = 2

Stage Three: At this stage we add the grade from the core subjects and the best two subjects. The student obtains the final aggregate at this stage.

That would be 4 + 2 = 6

This student obtained aggregate 6 in the 2024 BECE but had 7 ones in the BECE. When it comes to being placed, he or she will be placed based on the aggregate of 6 and ot the 7 ones obtained.

There are some fake grading and BECE aggregate calculation methods going around. Ignore them because WAEC has not changed the current STANINE grading system.
