Choose how to take your IELTS test and book online
To choose an official site for the IELTS test, you only need an official, valid document to prove your identity. The most preferred are your traveling passport and/or a valid national identification card.
The registration for the test can be done on paper or on a computer. All you need is a valid identification document and a bank card if you want to pay online. The interesting thing again is that you can take IELTS Online (IELTS Academic only) from the comfort of your home or any private space with a stable internet connection.

To book your test you will need to:
- Include your correct email address to enable you to receive key information about your test.
- Please note that candidates will not be allowed to take the test without the original ID document. The ID document should be a Passport/ National ID issued by the National Identification Authority for Ghanaians. Student ID, Voter ID, and driver’s license will not be accepted. The ID document is strictly a valid Passport for non-Ghanaians. Any other identity document will not be accepted. Please note that candidates under 18 years of age have to supply written consent by a parent or guardian in order to apply for a test place.
- Download and read our Information for Candidates , which contains important information about the test format, the question types, and the test results. Please note that IELTS is not recommended for test takers under the age of 16.
- Pay for your test. You can pay for your test either through our online registration system (Credit card/Debit Card or Mobile Money) or via bank transfer to any branch of Standard Chartered Bank in Ghana using the British Council Virtual Account deposit slip.See our Mobile Money FAQ here.
Once your booking is complete:
- You will receive a confirmation giving you the start time of your test and the venue address.
- Your Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day as the other sections, or on a different day within a 7-day window before or after your main test day. The test centre will send you a confirmation for the Speaking Test date.
- After booking your test, you will also receive an automatic email with your access codes to the free online course: IELTS Ready: Premium
- You will also receive your IELTS Reference Number to access the Test Taker Portal. Please make sure that you have included your email address correctly when you book your test.
