Monday 23rd September Declared A Public Holiday

Monday, 23rd  September 2024, has been declared a public holiday. This is to celebrate the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The day has become known as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial fell on Saturday, 21st September 2024. Since the date fell on a Saturday, the government has declared Monday a holiday.

Full Press release: Monday 23rd September Declared A Public Holiday

The general public is hereby informed that Saturday, 21st September, 2024, marks Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday.

However, in view of the fact that 21st September, 2024 falls on a Saturday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601) declared Monday, 23rd September, 2024 as an additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.

Here are five reasons why 21st September is a public holiday in Ghana:

  1. Kwame Nkrumah’s Birthday: The day marks the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He was Ghana’s ifrst president who become one of Africa’s most resepcted and celebrated people on the continent.
  2. Founder’s Day: It is celebrated as Founder’s Day to honor only Dr Kwame Nkrumah and his role as the founding father of modern Ghana.
  3. Reemberance of  National Independence and Nkrumah’s Struggles Nkrumah led Ghana to become the first African country to gain independence from colonial rule, making this day significant one in the history of Ghana.
  4. Recognition of Pan-Africanism: Nkrumah was a leading figure in the Pan-African movement, promoting unity among African countries and fighting for the liberation of other African nations.
  5. National Reflection: The holiday serves as a day for Ghanaians to reflect on the values of patriotism, self-reliance, and progress that Nkrumah championed.

Ghanaians love Nkrumah and the entire Africa appreciates Nkrumah for his efforts.
