New SHS1 Learning Area Subjects For Science Students

Students who completed their BECE in July 2024 and would choose General Science or Science as their area of study at the SHS are to take note of their likely core subjects and elective subjects if they are placed in any of their chosen schools to read Science. The number of new SHS1 learning area subjects for science students has increased. The number of subjects increased from a maximum of 8 with the introduction of new subjects or learning areas.

However, per the new SHS curriculum, students admitted to secondary school will learn 36 different subjects instead of the previous 63 subjects. Let us explain these in detail in the next paragraphs.

What Are The New SHS1 Students’ Learning Area Subjects For Science Students?

The subjects to be studied by science students have been divided into four categories. These are the mandatory or core subjects: Group B, Group C, and Group D. New subjects such as robotics, engineering and aviation and space have been introduced into the curriculum for science students.

In all science, students will be expected to study a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 11 subjects over their three years of study.

Interestingly, science students will also have to study one of the following: economics, geography, government, history, religious studies, Greek languages, Arabic, French, and literature in English.
