2024 BECE graduates can’t start their secondary education as SHS 1 students in September, according to the minority ranking members of the Education Committee in Parliament, in the persons of Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe and Dr. Apaak.
This was disclosed in a preference conference organised today, Thursday, August 22, 2024, by the minority. They disclosed that WAEC was yet to start the marking of the 2024 BECE scripts after the examination ended on July 15, 2024.
The delay in marking of the scripts means WAEC will have to postpone its post-exam activities to September and possibly release the BECE results in October 2024 instead of September. This will affect the academic calendar.
Speaking at the press conference on the unfortunate development, the minority called on the government to release funds to WAEC to ensure the situation is dealt with.
Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, while speaking during the press conferences, indicated that the government was still indebted to WAEC, which has made it impossible for WAEC to seek the services of examiners to mark the papers.
The current delays will affect the academic calendar again, he lamented.
BECE Graduates Can’t Start SHS in September – Monirity Press Conference Fulld Details
“As we speak now, WAEC has to postpone the marking of BECE scripts from this month to September because they don’t have the funds to do the coordination and marking, which we call the post-examination activities.”
“They still owe WAEC for the BECE, and we are demanding that the government pays this money to WAEC so that they can organise the marking in time.”
“As a result, the school calendar is going to be disrupted again. Those who are to go to SHS1 this September will be at home. They will not be able to go, so we are asking the government to release money to WAEC as urgently as they can so that the marking can take place.”

The GES projection that SHS1 students will report to school on 27th September, 2024, is in limbo as a result of the new development.
WAEC currently does not know when it will commence the marking. The release of its funds locked up with the government will determine its progress.
