The schools to be chosen are classified into three categories, with a fourth one being sampled from the first three. The schools are categorised into A, B, C, and D. Note that Category A schools are the most competitive, and often students with the best grades make it to such schools.

With the Free SHS being extended to include TVET, the program options of students have also increased. The addition of STEM schools further increases the options and programs available. Tradition programs available are General Science, General Arts, Visual Arts, Agricultural Science, Home Economics, and All Technical and Vocational Programmes in TVET.
When choosing a program, ensure that it matches your dream feature career and that you have a strong preference for the subjects that you need as basics to study a program.
For instance, common knowledge has it that students who want to study science or agriculture must have a good background in integrated science and mathematics. General arts is more related to language, social studies, and reading. Whichever program you are choosing, you need to find out the likely subjects you will learn under them. Since every school you choose is important, make sure that your choices are in the right order. Put your dream school on the school selection form as your first choice. Note that it is not compulsory to choose your first school from category A.

While GES and MoE have not openly declared cut-off points for school selection. Consider the following:.
Students who obtain grade 9 in mathematics or English language will miss placement in all schools selected.
Those who opt for board, for instance, but not day may miss schools and programs they chose if the school only has space for enrolment left for the same program but day students.
Those targeting Category A schools should make raw scores closer to 400 to stand a chance of being placed.

The location of the school you select for placement must be chosen wisely. The belief that after gaining admission as a day student you can change to boarding does not work. If you get admitted as a day student, you will complete the said SHS as a day student.
Ensure that you take a look at the proximity of the day school you choose, transportation costs, and whether you are comfortable living far from home.

Choose your preferred accommodation carefully. It is more competitive to get a boarding school than a day school, and this accounts for many of the students who end up using the self-placement module although they passed the exam. Do not opt for schools that have hostels unless you, as a parent, want your SHS1 learner to leave on his or her own, far from home, without anyone to regulate and monitor him or her.
